Interview with Kevin Secours - Systema Expert

Kevin Secours B.Ed. is one of North America's foremost specialists in Russian Systema. Kevin was long renown for his concise grasp of Systema and his innovative approach to sharing his knowledge. He has published some of the first and most comprehensive articles on the subject. He has been featured in numerous DVD's including his own best-selling combat series, and taught Systema on 5 continents. In 2010, Kevin formed The International Combat Systema Association to more fully represent his continuing evolution and understanding of the Russian martial arts.

What makes Russian Systema different from Krav Maga?

Systema is often equated to Krav because they are both military hybrids but beyond that they do not have much in common. Krav focuses more on aggressiveness and is about moving forward. They prioritize sweeping 360 degree blocks and direct pressure and a small arsenal of simple high probability techniques. SYSTEMA by comparison advocates a lot of breath work to help keep a high degree of relative relaxation and emphasizes on biomechanical efficiency. It emphasizes yielding rather than pressure and adaptability rather than memorization. Epistemologically, it actually the polar opposite.


What is the difference between what you teach and what a pure Russian Systema school will teach? 

What I teach (combat SYSTEMA) is my interpretation. SYSTEMA is a hybrid that was created in the 1930's but various teachers relay their version as if it has achieved perfection. I believe that no one or one system has all the answers and the definition of a hybrid is that it is constantly evolving. Evolution is a process not an end result. It should never stop shifting and integrating. I have no interest in trying to be Russian. I am a westerner and this necessarily leads to a different interpretation. I have profound previous experience and I will not forsake this either. I would expect no less of any student that trains with me. I advocate cross training and individual realization.




You have expertise in Goshinbudo. Can you tell us about this style and what it's strengths and weaknesses are?

Goshinbudo literally means self defense. It is all about survival and fighting. There are various schools of goshinbudo in the world but they are generally based on jujitsu in some respect. Our approach is all about getting home alive. It is very strong in it's principles, and like everything that we teach. I modify and adapt it so I am always trying to plug up its weaknesses. The key for us is to pressure test and then to observe and accept what we discovered to make the necessary changes.


We are also very interested in your expertise in Five Animal Shaolin Chuanshu. Many people claim animal styles are strictly for Hollywood. What are you thoughts on this? Can they be used successfully in real life combat? Can they be successfully applied in real life combat?

I can't speak to whether or not five animal work is purely Hollywood or not. It certainly weighs heavily in marketing. There was some good material in it. I certainly still favour a lot of gouging which I was first introduced to there, but I was working as a doorman when I used to teach it and literally had one encounter one night wherein I realized I was never using the style in application and was always reverting to my jujitsu; so I came in the next day and told my crew I couldn't teach it any more in good conscience. We haven't really used it very much since that day; save for as a basis of comparison and important life experience. There are strong advocates out there who could speak to it's value far better than I could.

What was the last 3 things you learned with martial arts?

The last three things I learned with martial arts:

First being an observation I made about hip movement with firearms when working with a defensive tactics friend of mine--it was one of those things he was doing without realizing it, just torquing the hip as he moved his eyes. Very subtle but a light bulb went off.

Second, I had to work through a lower back pull recently during one of the most hectic schedules ever, and it taught me a lot about isolating my core and moving on what was essential.

Third, we had a situation with a homeless guy shooting up heroine in the stairwell of the downtown office building where my dojo was and I had to bounce him out. It was late, I was tired and wasn't expecting him naturally and after the fact I was quite ramped up and I used a variation of staggered breathing (inhaling in this case in 6 increments and exhaling in 6) afterwards to calm myself down and realized firsthand just how effective it was for me.

Those have been the big three from the last few weeks.


What inspires you to be better next year than you are today?

I am inspired by everything. My son is a huge factor because he is only four and I want to be alive and healthy as long as possible to share everything that I know firsthand. My students are another huge factor because I want to feed those that are hungry and lately I have been on a real mission to get a lot of info out. There is just so much bad instruction out there. That alone is motivating.


What is your favorite quote? Why does it apply specifically to your life?

My favourite quote is from Rumi--the first obligation of the teacher is to destroy the idol the student would make of them. I try constantly to advocate critical thinking and to get rid of fantasy and worship and wishful thinking in the dojo. Ego is a life waster. I just want honest sharing.

Here's a hypothetical situation. All government has broken down and it's chaos in the world. You are only able to have 3 weapons and no firearms. What would they be and why?

My apocalypse backpack is already packed-- cold steel karambit is the first go-to. It is my favorite for hand to hand. Great leverage and cutting capacity. It fits naturally with my fighting approach. Second would be a good quality Kuhkri. My ka-bar is in my bag right now. It doubles for an axe for bushcraft and can hack a path through anything and even throws well. Third would be my tomahawk. You can hook or smash or hack. I double it up with the karambit for optimal zombie mayhem. It deploys quickly, works well in close combat or at a distance, again can be thrown easily and is super durable and still effective if you forgot to pack a sharpening stone.



What new projects can we expect to see from you in the next 5 years?

The next five years will see a lot of growth in my online learning site www.combatprofessor.com. It will see the launch of a instructional DVD series with a major US provider. It will see continued stunt and choreography work in the entertainment industry as early as this year. It will see a reduction in travel and seminars with focus on home life. It will also see a lot more written material and hopefully a continued growth in my own training and teaching.

Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?

Final words would just be to trust your gut and to always choose teachers over styles. If something doesn't feel like the right fit, keep looking. You are the best expert on you. Don't be told otherwise.

Interview with Monty Hendrix

Master Monty Hendrix is the Founder and Owner of Essential Martial Arts.  Master Hendrix is a published author and his column "The Essentials" is currently featured in each issue of the international martial arts magazine, "TaeKwonDo Times," (sold at Barnes and Noble).  Master Hendrix holds the rank of 7th Dan Black Belt in TaeKwonDo, 4th Degree Master in HapKiDo and is a Full Instructor in Contemporary Jeet Kune Do. He also has 10 years of experience in Philippine Martial Arts and several years actively training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/Submission grappling.

Which of your accomplishments means the most to you? Why?

I don't really think about life in terms of accomplishments as much as I enjoy the journey. I have a room full of major championships along with belts and certificates but I feel my greatest accomplishment is seeing a student make a personal improvement - on or off the mat - and then having them come back to me and say our martial arts program helped them make it possible. 

You hold a black belt or instructor level in numerous martial arts. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each? Which one do you recommend people start with?

All arts have strengths and weaknesses.  However, these strengths and weaknesses are different for each person.  I like the diversity of HapKiDo. I like the aggressive nature of Jeet Kune Do. I like the softness of Tai Chi. I like the extreme nature of the knife and stick and I like the simplicity and work out of traditional Taekwon-Do.  The weakness of any art is held within the personal limitations of the individual studying that art. 





When do you advocate for a child to fight back against a bully at school? Many schools have taken on the policy to suspend anyone participating in fighting even if it's self defense? 

When the other option is to be injured physically.  The rules are secondary if bodily harm becomes imminent. 

It seems systems like BJJ and Jeet June Do do not have forms. However, systems like Taekwondo feel they are instrumental? So, how important are forms if some awesome systems don't use them?

Forms are simply a set of combinations along with a method of solo training that is handed down from instructor to student in order to build: Technical ability along with physical fitness and mental discipline.  Nothing more and nothing less.  All legitimate fighting systems have combinations and solo training drills that build these attributes.  Some use formal "sets" and some use a hanging bag, while others simply use mat space.  It is up to the individual to find a system and training method that suits them physically and mentally.  

When we go to tournaments we see young kids with black belts. We also hear people speaking negatively about it. What is your take on young kids being awarded black belts?

I can not criticize how anyone trains their students. Each system has different emphasis. So, that system may or may not be appropriate or feasible for a young person to meet certain training goals and make milestone achievements.  I have styles such as HapKiDo, Knife Fighting, Jeet Kune Do and Tai Chi that children are not allowed to even participate.  In our Taekwon-Do program, an individual must be at least 16 years old to achieve a full ranking black belt. Below that age they can only earn a "junior" status black belt. I do this because I have no personal desire to train a child the same way we would train an adult.  Therefore the black belt designation must be different for us.  

Critics claim there is little or no punching in TKD. Is this so? 

There is little punching seen in Olympic style TKD sparring b/c of the rules.  However, I have seen many Olympic TKD stylist perform incredible feats of breaking with the hands. Additionally I have seen their forms and they have a full arsenal of hand techniques.  However, we only teach traditional Taekwon-Do.  The system we teach has many more hand techniques than kick techniques and hands and feet are both often and regularly used to score in sparring both to the body and to the head.  The confusion for non TKD stylist is that both branches of TKD teach powerful kicks as well as spinning and jumping kicks.  These kicks are very dynamic visually so I believe some people outside of the TKD community believe TKD must only be kicking b/c kicks are the hallmarks of the style.  I could see this being an innocent mistake.  

Why do we see so many Jeet Kune Do experts also specialize in Kali or a type of Philippine Martial Arts?

You see this a lot b/c both systems involve hand traps at close quarters. Also, JKD does not actually use weapons so FMA is a great way to learn the stick and knife for any stylist.  

What changes do you see happening in modern martial arts? What are  your thoughts on them?

I think you will see martial arts continuing to spread. Some people will continue to love the traditional arts. Some will love the self defense systems. Some will love the diverse and mixed systems while others will enjoy the systems that teach fitness and relaxation. With the Internet being such a large part of our lives now, I see more people becoming aware that there is a martial art out there for everyone.  As a result of that you will also see more martial arts schools opening up and probably closing down. Just because you love something doesn't mean everyone will love it. Just because you can "do" something doesn't mean you can teach it. So buyer beware.  

How to do you insure all 3 of your schools get enough personal attention?

We have a full staff of professional certified black belts at each location.

Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?

Train hard and enjoy the journey no matter what art or arts you train.  All arts have something to offer. Don't let anyone tell you differently.  I believe there is no BEST art but there might be a best art for YOU !  Just remember not to disrespect what is the best for someone else on your path of discovery.

Interview with Anthony Pho - Martial Arts Expert, Actor and Stunt Man

Anthony Pho is an expert in multiple martial arts styles. He currently lives in France where he enjoys a successful career as an actor and stunt man in French Movies.  

Tell  us about your martial arts and acrobatic background.

I started martial arts when I was 13 with Vovinam Vietvodao for 5 years.  This is a very complete style considered as Vietnamese kung fu. Afterwards I studied Taekwondo. I’m a black belt and I have learned the basics of gymnastics. I also do tricking and I train more on weapons (single/double nunchuks, katana, bo staff, kamas). 

But since 2008, I started to learn screen fighting and falls. I was lucky to meet Olivier Schneider and Patrick Vo from  U-men stunts. They choreographed various movies including Fast and Furious 6, Taken and Safe House. Olivier and Patrick have been my teachers for a year and I have also had several years of training with my friend Manu Lanzi, who really helps me a lot. I can’t thank him enough for being my teacher.

What do you think you would be doing if you did not have martial arts and acrobatic training?

I have a Masters degree in computer science. I could work as an engineer but I have been so lucky to land various jobs in the movie industry after I graduated.


How dangerous is being a stunt person? Is it as dangerous as it looks or is there an aspect of safety to it?

I don’t think it’s dangerous because you should know what you are able to do and NOT able to do. You have to train a lot to prepare your body and everyone has their specialities. 

If you don’t feel a stunt, don’t be upset to tell the stunt coordinator you don’t want to take the risk. There is nothing worse than making your stunt coordinator embarrassed because you got injured doing something you know you could not do.

You are padded most of the time, and you rehearse the stunt little by little, so most of the time, it is safe and the stunt coordinator is there to prevent any risks.


In your opinion, what is different between being an actor in France and being an actor in the United States? 

That really depends on your projects and yourself. To me, as an Asian actor in France, it’s very difficult to play a role that is different from that of an Asian character. There are not as many projects compared to the United States, but we often play the same type of roles; as an immigrant, a waiter, somebody in a Chinese mafia… But sometimes you have other kind of interesting propositions. But some American friends told me they have the similar roles as I do in France. I hope that will change one day so that we have a variety of roles to choose from.

What do you feel defines a "successful" actor?

To me, a "successful" actor is somebody that can really choose to play want he wants to play and the projects he wants to be involved in. "Successful" is a kind of freedom for the actor.


What is something you know now that you wish you knew when you were first starting out as an actor? 

During the different acting classes and movies I’ve done, the best advice I could give anyone is to let yourself go! You have to be free of your body, of your mind and concentrate on your character, your partners and your environment. You always have to be aware of everything, and accept what your partners give to you. If something unexpected happens and you are surprised, integrate it in your acting; that makes it more real and more interesting.

It’s easy to tell you this but you have to act, act and act to understand it.


What character have you played that you felt was most like you? Why?

I’ve just finished shooting a new TV show for France called " CHEFS" directed by Arnaud Malherbe about french food and culture. It’s weird because I have never really cooked. I played Woo, who is Korean. He came to France to learn the french food and culture. I could really relate to this character because he’s someone very nice, shy, always smiling and always trying to help others.  It was funny to play because you just have to learn the lines and be directed.




What is the most interesting role you have played?

A movie called "Shanghai Belleville" directed by Show Chun LEE (not released yet) where I had one of the main characters. I played Liwei, a Chinese immigrant who came to France with his little brother because their parents were killed for being smugglers. He tried to live in France, build a new life and he was confronted with many integration problems. It was very difficult because it was my first role in a movie and I did not have prior experience to draw from. The character had such a terrible experience in their life.  I really worked hard to learn the history of my character and his personality.  I have written a diary to try to know everything about him in order to construct the character, which in turn helps me to act.  I have also done a really hard diet to change the way I move because the character did not have the daily comfort in their life like I do.  Despite all this, I still think that this is the most interesting experience I have had. 


Do you have any hobbies outside acting, martial arts and acrobatics?

I really enjoy photography and I started to direct my own videos with cute stories involving my cousins aged of 6 to 9.

Interview with Angela Jennings - MMA Fighter

Angela Jennings is an upcoming MMA fighter. She trains 5 to 6 days a week in Muay Thai, BJJ and MMA preparing to be the best Female MMA fighter she can be. She is striving to go pro in the near future. 

What inspires you?

I would have to say that Angela Jennings inspires me. I inspired myself. That is one of the things I love about MMA or fighting…it’s just you out there, you and your opponent. Win or lose you have no one to blame but yourself. I have something to prove to myself and that is what I want to do.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date? Why did it mean so much to you?

My biggest accomplishment to date would have to be me stepping into my debut fight. I stepped into the cage with a less than 24 hour notice against a tough experienced fighter who was also a title belt holder, at Joe Louis Area in Detroit MI. I took the fight with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Although I lost in the 3rd round via rear naked choke, it was the best fight of my amateur career to date and I couldn’t of asked for a better experience or debut fight.



Congratulations on winning your fight against Courtney Losievsky in: 47 seconds. What do you feel gave you the advantage during that fight? 

Thank you, I feel like I had a couple advantages in that fight…I came in very prepared, mentally and physically. Any fight I take or anytime I step into that cage I am always prepared to fight someone that is the best. As my coach always tells me “We aren’t preparing you for this fight we are preparing you for the top (UFC)”.  I always train as if I were to fight the world champion. I never underestimate anybody!

Are there any rules that are different between female MMA fights and male fights? Is so, do you agree or disagree with these differences? 

When it comes to rules, I don’t there is any difference and I agree with that. 

What are 3 things women should know before they consider before participating in MMA fighting?

When it comes to participating in MMA, especially the cage... There are a few things that not only women should know but anyone. MMA is not a joke. MMA is something you have to be dedicated too. It cannot just be a part-time thing, especially when you want to compete in a ring. People need to understand it is a life altering experience, once you step into a cage you don’t step out the same person. Some people rush or get into fighting and don’t realize you can get hurt, or even die. When you participate in MMA you have to be prepared mentally and physically knowing that.

What do you think makes the difference between someone who wants to be a professional fighter and someone who makes it?

The Difference will come down to your mental mind state and HEART. You have to be willing to dedicate your life and be willing to make sacrifices. You either want it or you don’t.  There is always going to be someone else out there who is working harder than you and wants it more, that is what you have to tell yourself.

What are your pet peeves?

Hmmm…I would have to say one of my biggest pet peeves is “WANNA BE, UFC” Fighters. One of my biggest pet peeves is seeing someone who comes to the gym 1 or 2 times every 2 weeks, and trains for an hour and says they want to fight. Or trains once or twice and wants to tell everyone they are a fighter.  NO you’re not a fighter! I can tell you right now; I’m a fighter and I’m in the gym 5-6 days a week, more than once a day, especially with my fight camps. 

What superhero do you believe resembles your personality the most?

Lol, I don’t think there is any superhero that resembles my personality.

What can we expect to see from you in the future?

In the near future I am planning on going pro. I have some big opportunities coming up and hopefully you will really get to see me showcase my skills.

Interview with Jarrett Arthur - Krav Maga Expert

Jarrett Arthur, an expert in Krav Maga and self defense,  is the founder and owner of M.A.M.A. Self-Defense. She has been featured on national TV for her experience and expertise and teaches all over the country. 

BKO Kung Fu: How does one become certified as a Krav Maga instructor? Which organizations are worldly accepted as authentic?

Jarrett: How does one become certified as a Krav Maga instructor? The short answer: blood, sweat, and tears. I can only speak to the certification process of Krav Maga Worldwide, the organization I’m certified through. After attaining a high level of proficiency, and under the tutelage and recommendation from an already certified instructor, you can apply to take your first 7 day certification course. You train about 8 hours each day, and what makes these certification courses unique, apart from the fact a large number of participants don’t pass, is that the focus is split between the physical performance of the techniques, and your ability to transfer knowledge to students…to teach in an effective way. Just because you can doesn’t mean you can teach, and that’s an important distinction. You get certified by level in Krav Maga, so as you progress through the system as a practitioner, you can train for higher and higher levels of instructor certifications. Each course is nothing short of brutal, physically and mentally. But it should be. It’s Krav Maga after all, not Yoga. 

The question of worldly accepted organizations is one rife with conflict. Certainly the two most most well known organizations at the moment are Krav Maga Worldwide and Krav Maga Global. Just as in any system there are plenty of hybrids and smaller organizations, but what makes Krav Maga unique is the system allows for slight variations in technique because it’s based on what will work for students, and students aren’t all the same. So you might have one instructor that teaches slightly different techniques than another instructor, and both versions are Krav Maga, and both versions are acceptable based on effectiveness on the street. That being said, there are certainly less reputable organizations and instructors out there. I try not to get caught up in the political b.s. of the whole thing, but instead focus on what is supposed to be the common goal of all Krav Maga organizations and all instructors: to equip students with life saving techniques that will effectively help them survive a violent attack on the street, or in the words of founder Imi Lichtenfeld… “So that one may walk in peace…”



BKO: What are the 3 most common myths about Krav Maga? Can you set the record straight.

Jarrett: I’m not sure I can come up with 3 common myths about Krav Maga. For the most part people who have heard of the system tend to have a good understanding of what it is, although most butcher the pronunciation of the name. I think the single most common myth is that Krav Maga is a martial art. I’m sure some instructors and practitioners will want to argue with me that it is, in fact, a martial art, but I think it’s incredibly important to make a distinction between martial arts, and what I consider Krav Maga to be: a reality-based tactical system. While people learn martial arts for many different reasons (beauty, balance, focus, competition, coordination, discipline, etc.), people learn Krav Maga essentially for one reason, and that is to learn how to effectively survive modern-day threats and attacks. Our philosophies are different, our training styles are different, our training modalities and drills are different, our mindset is different. Krav Maga is not a martial art.

The only other common myth I can think of is that Krav Maga is about hurting, maiming, or killing your attacker. Yes, Krav Maga is an aggressive system and we train aggressively. But not only would those mythical goals be unethical and legally irresponsible, there needs to be the understanding that the longer you remain in the fight, the worse your chances of survival. Our main goal is escape, so when we strike we do so to buy opportunities for escape.

BKO: Why should people join your classes versus other self defense system schools?

Jarrett: There are fantastic schools and truly excellent self-defense instructors out there. To be perfectly honest, my main goal is to get people into reputable self-defense classes, whether my classes or someone else’s. That being said, I think that there is something very special about female students having the opportunity to learn from female instructors. Despite the fact Krav Maga, at its core, is about techniques that will be effective regardless of size, strength, and weight, even the most empathetic, sensitive male instructor will never fully be able to understand the unique set of emotional, psychological, and physical characteristics a female self-defense students possess. This, I think, is my unique selling point, and that of other elite female self-defense instructors. In my opinion, both personally and professionally, self-defense taught to women by a woman can be a very powerful, and empowering experience.

BKO: What are the 3 most common things you see women do to put themselves in danger? What do you suggest to avoid them?

Jarrett: 1) Talk, text, or otherwise use phones and other devices while out in public. If I had a quarter for every time I saw a woman walking from Point A to Point B with her eyes down and attention completely on the screen between her two hands I’d be a very rich woman. No matter how important you think your text, call, or email is I can assure you it’s not worth your life. Put the devices down. Look up. Look around. Pay attention. Be aware.

2) Make unnecessarily sloppy transitions into their vehicles. A large amount of violent crime against women happens in and around the transition into or out of vehicles. Carrying huge amounts of gear, many bags, digging in their purse for their keys, not paying attention to their surroundings, sitting in idle cars to organize belongings, and leaving car doors ajar while getting in and getting settled or loading/unloading the car are all ways that leave women particularly vulnerable to being targeted as a victim. Have keys out and in hand before leaving the house, building, or store. Leave one hand free of bags to fight back with, look around as you load or unload the car, check under in and around car before approaching, get in quickly, close and lock doors immediately, and don’t sit in idling cars are all ways to be safer. 

3) Run, walk, or hike alone with earbuds in or headphones on and music blasting. I know music is an important motivator during workouts, but save it for the gym. You don’t want to limit your senses when exercising outside, especially solo. Best policy is to leave the music at home, followed by the use of an external speaker, and using only one earbud at a time.

BKO: When do you advocate for a child to fight back against a bully at school? Many schools have taken on the policy to suspend anyone participating in fighting even if it's self defense? 

Jarrett: I could honestly write a book about this topic, and in fact that’s on my to do list. But to try and keep it as brief as possible I’ll just summarize my own personal beliefs, my professional experience, and my bullying philosophy. 

Bullies have been around forever. They will never cease to exist. Never. Bullies are an important part of our social fabric. Although the topic of bullying has gotten a huge amount of press lately, it’s not a new issue. What is new is (a) the incidences of significant mental health issues and suicide in young bully victims and (b) zero tolerance policies in schools. Our country has taken a huge shift towards what I call a Culture of Passivity. Don’t act, don’t do anything to change your situation, simply passively complain about it on social media, or rely on someone else to fix the problem. How did we treat bully victims in previous eras? We told them to stand up for themselves and fight back. Even if they got “beat up” by the bully, the bullying usually stopped because they refused to be a victim. Now what do we tell them? Whatever you do, don’t fight back. Instead you should ignore them, walk away, and tell an adult. How often does that work? Rarely. Bully victims are getting bombarded with the message that it is WRONG to stand up for themselves, to demand the basic human right of keeping themselves safe from harm by fighting back, that they must rely on others for savior. There is a psychological phenomenon called “Learned Helplessness” which essentially says, the perception that you don’t have control over the outcome of a harmful situation can lead to mental illness such as anxiety and depression. This is what we are doing to our kids. We are taking away their ability to feel they have control over a situation in which they are being harmed. The consequences are devastating, to say the least. 

School administrations are in a very difficult situation. They don’t want to advocate fighting back because they don’t want to advocate fighting. Of course those are two very different things: fighting back versus fighting, and martial arts instructors will tell you that training kids to fight back usually leads to fewer incidences of fighting, not more. But nevertheless, in the modern age of lawsuits, schools don’t want to run the risk. So where does that leave us? For ten years, parents have been coming to me and asking me to teach their kids how to fight back. The story is almost always the same: their child has been victimized for months or years, they are suffering from anxiety and/or depression, the principal has done nothing effective, the teachers have done nothing effective, the bully’s parents have done nothing effective, law enforcement has done nothing effective, and they are concerned for the well being, mental and physical, of their child. “We refuse to allow our child to have to subject himself to being a human punching bag. We refuse to allow our child to be terrified to go to school each day. We don’t care if he gets suspended our expelled, the overall health of our child is the top priority.” I have heard this dozens and dozens of times. We equip the child with skills, he effectively stands up for himself or fights back. And more often than not that solves the bullying problem. Sometimes the child gets in trouble at school, sometimes he doesn’t, but he gets empowered from the experience in profound ways. 

My anti-bully training focuses on prevention, avoidance, and deescalation. Through role-playing we practice using our voices and body language to stand up to bullies. Physical defensive techniques are taught as a last resort, to combat physical threats such as punches, kicks, tackling, headlocks, and chokes, but they are taught, and I have had plenty of students utilize them with success.

As parents, you must make a personal decision on where you stand on this topic. If you believe that it is unacceptable to tell a child not to defend himself in the face of physical harm, regardless of school policies, then it is your responsibility to equip your child with the necessary skills, and communicate with your child the exact course of action that is expected of him. 

BKO: You have had many high profile guest spots on some major shows. What are a few tips you would give someone before they step in front of a real TV recording camera for the first time?

Jarrett: There’s an element of on-camera success that can’t be practiced or learned. Your dynamism in front of your students might not translate directly to the camera. To a certain extent you either have “it” or you don’t. That being said, practice certainly makes you better, and just like training you can’t only go through the paces in your head and expect a fantastic outcome, you have to physically practice as well. Have friends and family members film you. A lot. Watch the tape back and make adjustments. Film again. Watch again. Practicing your lines or your segment in your head won’t cut it. Nor will practice filming by yourself with the camera on a tripod. You need actual practice in front of actual people.

BKO: With so many fitness experts becoming a popular field of work, how have you raised yourself above the crowd?

Jarrett: I think, I’ve strived to rise above the crowd by not including myself, at least not intentionally, in the fitness expert field. I don’t consider myself a fitness expert, it’s not my primary professional goal, and I don’t think I particularly excel as a fitness coach, at least not at an elite level. What I excel at is as a self-defense instructor, and figuring out how to bring the education and skills of personal safety to as many people as possible. Krav Maga is a seriously excellent way to get in shape, so instead of focusing my work on fitness specifically, for students, followers, and readers whose main goal is fitness, I try to encourage them to include self-defense training within their fitness routines. That way they can continue to work towards their goal of fitness, well being, and physique, while at the same time learning potentially life saving skills. It’s a win-win situation. 

BKO: If you could only do 3 exercise in solitary confinement what would they be? Why these 3?

Jarrett: Push-ups, pull-ups (I’d have to chisel a ledge if I couldn’t find an overhanging bar), and burpees. Push-ups and pull-ups are two foundational exercises that people shouldn’t live without. Together, they work the entire anterior and posterior muscle groups of the upper body including the core muscle groups. They are essential to developing striking power. Burpees are a head-to-toe exercise that works explosive strength, particularly through hip extension (also essential in fighting and almost every other athletic movement known to man), and if done in high enough quantities also stresses the cardiovascular system. So between the three, you hit pretty much all of the vital functional movement needs.


BKO: If you could only eat 3 foods for the rest of your life and you could only spend $6 a day, what 3 items would you choose? Why?

Jarrett: Well, with those limits I’d grow my own vegetable garden, have chickens for eggs, and live near a river to fish. Is that answer cheating? If we’re talking about 3 foods I’d have to buy at a store for $6/day I think I’d go with eggs, a green vegetable such as broccoli (love broccoli), and however much poultry I could buy with what I had left. In my own personal diet I eat a lot of lean animal protein (egg whites, poultry, and low mercury fish) and a lot of green veggies. I know I could easily survive on those staples alone. That and my dark chocolate!

BKO: What future projects are you working on that we can look forward too?

Jarrett: We released my first DVD: Don’t Mess With M.A.M.A., which features the top strategies and techniques of my M.A.M.A. Self-Defense program. I have a ton of exciting projects in the works including ebooks and videos, almost all of which will focus on self-defense for women, parents, and kids.

BKO: Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?

Jarrett: Reality-based self-defense training is very different from traditional martial arts training. I absolutely love my traditional martial arts training, but as a woman, I can’t imagine existing in the world without my self-defense education and skills. When we’re talking about the street, techniques that might work, or could work, or sometimes work are unacceptable. I see “self-defense” techniques all the time (trips, throws, joint manipulation, pressure points, chokes, tackles, leverage techniques) that I look at as a woman and know in an instant that I would not be able to make it work in a real life setting, with real life speed, intensity, aggression, striking, size and weight differences. 

Seek realistic, applicable, effective, street-based self-defense training. Encourage family, friends, and coworkers to seek training, even if just one workshop.
